My American Flags

Election season is nearly a constant in the USA. Along with stump speeches and political promises comes flag-waving and claims of patriotism, providing an ideal setting for exploring and reimagining the symbolism of the Stars and Stripes. I started making small, painted cardboard collages with the US flag design as the jumping off point during the fraught 2020 election cycle. The apparent conflict between what the star spangled banner purported to uphold and reality begged for exploration. I began work reflecting on my evolving and diverse feelings about this country, using the structure and colors of the star-bangled banner. "My American Flags" explores truths not so self evident.
